Google Algorithm Update Factors Mobile Into The Equation

Google Mobile FriendlyIn this post we will sum up the impending Google Mobile Apocalypse.

Google has announced that “mobile friendliness” will now be part of the search ranking formula starting in April 2015. Like most major Google updates there has been a lot of people online shouting that “the sky is falling” and quit possibly “the end is near.” This happens with almost every notable Google shift. Search marketing and web development companies are leading the online charge to “fear” business owners into making buying decisions.

The Bottom Line: This IS Important. Not “sky falling” important, but the update will effect your online visitation depending on your market and competition.

What Does Google Mobile Friendly Mean? For inbound mobile traffic (primarily handheld smart phones) Google will now give a higher priority to websites that deliver an enhanced mobile experience. There are hundreds of search ranking factors, and they will still be in play. Even IF your site is not mobile friendly you will still be included in the search results depending on competition and your Authority in the marketplace.


Important! This Google change only impacts visitation from mobile users.

It’s All About the Audience

Successful marketing on the internet has always been about the audience but today it is more important than ever before. It’s no longer sufficient to have good search engine rankings. Developing good search engine rankings is a process that is best begun as soon as possible and nurtured regularly over a prolonged period for wide and deep, consistent 1st page rankings.

This is the big wide net of the marketing plan though. It’s important to develop a core group of people who not only buy from you but also tell others about you. You find, develop and feed these “aficionados” through various means of list building and communication.

1) Blogging ::: Yup, you’ll hear this in just about every post I paste here. Blogging is how we help our web site develop a personality. It’s beyond the boundaries of marketing department copy, brochures and scripts.

2) Send Email Newsletters ::: Which is mainly comprised of snippets and links of your recent blog posts

3) Build a Fan Base at Facebook ::: Encourage debate and discussion with total transparency and a sense of community

4) Build a Following on Twitter ::: Interact and participate with your following. Stay relevant to your marketing strategy

5) Find other places where people congregate on the web that you have an affinity with and participate

6) Offer a place and a reason to sign up for the newsletter on your web site. Also, place links to your social media pages and make sure its easy to get to your main site from the blog.

7) Get involved with the mobile web. I reserve this topic for another post of its own!

Many business people will shrug and say they don’t have the time for all of this. I say, you don’t have a choice! This is where business is going and in many cases… it’s gone baby! if you can’t do it then you have to hire it out. Either way, you have to make the commitment. Slow but sure all of your competition is doing it.

I was recently presented with one of my favorite web challenges; How to do something for nothing.

One of my “starving musician” projects was selected to perform a showcase set at the Los Angeles Film Festival for music industry people. The artist’s website was designed using a large amount of Adobe Flash. The site looks great in a browser, but visiting via a mobile device delivers an awful rendering. Flash is not supported by most mobile machines, including iPhone and Android powered devices. Email to Cell Phone

Have you ever wanted to send a quick email to someones cell phone but did not want to take the time to peck out the message on your phone? Me too! I may be the last person on earth to know this – You can send an email to cell phone directly from any computer.

You need to know two bits of information; first the recipients cell phone number, second the cell phones service provider. If you don’t know what cellular company provides the service then just type the phone number into the Reverse Phone Directory and it will list the cell phone service provider. If you don’t know the cell number then why would you want to send an email to text message anyway?

The Google Android Open Source (completely free) mobile platform picked up some major players last month including Sony Ericsson, Garmin International, SoftBank and Vodaphone. These companies will give Google additional momentum in the mobile search arena, putting them one step closer to overtaking the Apple iPhone.

The Apple iPhone is based on a proprietary system (closed source) and Apple has declined to license its software to third parties. This positions Google’s mobile software project to become the leading mobile OS (operating system).

The mobile search market share expanded in 2008 to over 9% of all web searches conducted. Business can no longer ignore the importance of having a mobile friendly website. Here is the good news – The Google Android system will display traditional web pages (similar to the iPhone) making special web pages or alternate .mobi sites unnecessary. Currently the iPhone can not render Flash, but we can only hope that flaw will be corrected.

Google AdWords Smartphone Targeting Campaigns allow advertisers to target or opt-out of ads destined to be displayed in moblie devices. You can now choose to display ads exclusively on mobile devices, create ad campaigns specifically for mobile, and get separate performance reporting for mobile phone targeted ad campaigns.
